Squid Game creator Hwang Dong-hyuk on the new seasons: “I’m so exhausted. I’m so tired. In a way, I have to say, I’m so sick of Squid Game. I’m so sick of my life making something, promoting something. So I’m not thinking about my next project right now. I’m just thinking about going to some remote island and having my own free time without any phone calls from Netflix. … Not the Squid Game island.”

Season 2 of Squid Game, inspired by the violent 2009 Ssangyong labor strikes, explores themes of economic inequality and survival. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of Squid Game, revealed in an interview with AFP that the protagonist, Seong Gi-hun’s character is inspired from the 2009 Ssangyong Motor Company labor strikes. During this period, over 2,600 workers—nearly 40% of the staff—were laid off, leading to a 77-day factory occupation and violent clashes with riot police.
