Finally watched Spirited Away recently.
I was expecting it to be a life-changing film, but it was not.
I think the name got my expectations too high.

I think it’s also the timing. Spirited Away released 23 years ago and was way ahead of its time.
Of course we have a lot of options now and the cinematic universe has advanced a lot. It wasn’t the case 2 decades ago.

Do you think if I would like The Boy and the Heron, which was released more recently, more? Not that they can be compared directly, but same studio, so I'm guessing similar vibes maybe.

I am yet to watch The Boy and the Heron. I think @Shivani27 and @cyberjunkie have watched it.

But just imagine a kid watching spirited away in the world where she grew up with Scooby Doo and Popeye and Pokémon just catching up.
It was an eye opener for me.

It's actually huge
One, because nothing like this was seen by the west before this
Two, there are crazy amount of eastern myths it takes inspiration from and hence, their relatability
Three, the subtle messaging is done too well

I should think it's unlikely you'll find the new movie appealing. If you have followed Studio Ghibli, especially Miyazaki's, movies all this while, you might. The Boy and the Heron doubles down on all the whimsical stuff and at times, even feels like a homage to his earlier work. A fitting conclusion, it could have been.

But the studio has already teased Miyazaki's next

It’s never his last, especially when they say it is.

His films have always been a nostalgic journey for me, with their feel-good essence, the compelling visuals and characters, along with Miyazaki's unique way of portraying complex real-life issues subtly yet clearly, are what I enjoy the most.
While I loved it, my friend, who's new to Miyazaki's style, found it a bit confusing and disconnected at times due to the introduction of numerous characters. Nevertheless, it's a beautiful experience overall.
@omkar you will find the style very similar to spirited away in the new movie too.
