Lots of detail. Okish narration but he should stick to writing about dead folks

I have read some biographies and I see a pattern. This can’t just be coincidence.

The narrative looks pretty blah from the screenshots

It seems written in a hurry. Reminding me a little of the Jobs book. Parts of it are nice but the flow is erratic.

And yet, I see a few good things coming out of such books

1. Good to know life of such people, anyway

2. You realise that in absence of great writing, one must not stop or procrastinate. There’s a possibility of success anyway!

Pardon my ignorance, but shouldn’t biographies be written for only no-longer-alive people? Life has got so much potential that such biographies seem unfair & incomplete. I think Nimish here can share his experience comparing the biographies of living & dead people.

I’d love to know why you believe that

Delivering happiness is an autobiography, if I’m not mistaken. I’m talking biographies here.

You’re right. I was saying from the perspective of autobiography being a biography anyway! Some lives are too interesting to wait for them to pass away before we get to know about them. I feel so is true for how some interesting companies are formed — I’ve read about Twitter, Netflix, Disney, Nike, for example

Oh yes, but I am a little concerned about the presentation. He seems a little star struck

Egad, my editors would be scandalised. But some copy always beats no copy.

Well, classically a biography written a while after the demise of the subject is best as it allows a very objective perspective. That said, as @him pointed out, it always helps to know as much as we can of folks who change the world. Also publishers prefer bringing out books about the already living as they generally have a larger audience while alive.

Exactly. I agree. A big point to keep in mind, though, is how balanced the author is. Often they go off on tangents. I cannot remember reading a single balanced biography of an Indian cricketer in recent times.

Hard thing to realise. A lot of potential authors cease to write coz they think they lack the the potential to author anything.

That’s true. A big fault lies with editors who try too hard to belittle work rather than praising it. Mind you, the flip side is that on some levels there is so much trash floating around that everyone thinks they can write.

Yes sir, absolutely. Famous stuff that’s inherently trash 🗑️
