Talking of the best Sherlock Holmes on film today inevitably triggers a debate between supporters of Benedict Cumberbatch (“Sherlock”), Jonny Lee Miller (“Elementary”) and Robert Downey Jr (Sherlock Holmes films). Many of those who have followed the character’s screen appearances from the previous century, however, might say that the best on-screen Sherlock of them all was Jeremy Brett, who played the detective in the Granada TV series in the 1980s.

Brett’s Holmes was classical and based on Doyle’s description of the detective, as was the entire series. There were no unorthodox flourishes. But what we got instead was perhaps the closest thing to the OG Sherlock on screen - Brett was lean, tall, could flip from sharp to disinterested, and had a clipped way of speaking that was inch perfect. He would have been 90 yesterday. If you have never seen him as Holmes, do. It might change the way you see him!

Here’s where you can catch some of the episodes on YouTube. They might seem a little slow and lack the frenetic pace and colour of modern versions, but there is…something. And that something is magic. And mostly Jeremy Brett. https://m.youtube.com/playlist…
