This livery was used to recreate the one that was flown by JRD / Tat air lines back in 1940s. It was also timed to celebrate the 150 years of Tata group. It was called the Retrojet
❤️
jitesh
The Retrojet bears the registration VT-ATV that was originally used by a Tata Air Lines DC-3 aircraft in the 1940s.
jitesh
Such tributes happen a lot outside India, but this is the first time someone did something this thoughtful.
jitesh
I’ll share another similar retro livery tomorrow.

In 2004, Continental Airlines & United airlines merged to form what is now called just United airlines.
Seen here is one of the United airlines planes (Boeing 737-900) in a special and retro livery of Continental Airlines.

I was lucky enough to spot this at Denver Airport (DEN) in October 2022

Singapore airlines runs this plane on two of the world’s current longest non stop flights
SQ21/22 : SIN-EWR-SIN
SQ23/24: SIN-JFK-SIN
Such is the demand on this route that SQ does only Premium economy and business class. No Economy.

Today’s picture of the day is unique because it’s of a crashed airplane that has now become a tourist destination.
Yes!
This is a US Navy Douglas C117 that crashed in 1973.
I captured this during my visit in 2017.

In today’s plane picture of the day we pay tribute to a very very special aircraft — also known as the Queen of the Skies.

This is the Boeing 747. Why is today a good (and sad) day to talk about this plane?
Because yesterday was when the LAST Boeing 747 was rolled out of the production line.. a solid 54 years after it first started.

54 years.

I was lucky enough to fly on it only once in life (so far). This was LAX-AMS in July 2018.

Before I talk about this plane, can someone guess the plane instead from this view?
Bonus points for answering what this overall phenomenon is called. I’ll answer and explain about both in detail later.

I don’t think we have that amazing AV geeks on Openvy yet. I’ll wait for you to share.
Correct, @2shar
The broader term is Wake Turbulence.
Wingtip vortices make up the primary and the most dangerous component of wake turbulence.

This aircraft is the Airbus A340.
It is one of the 3 quad-engine commercial planes that are currently in service. The 2 others being the Airbus A380 and Boeing 747 (which I covered earlier).

Simply put:
Wake turbulence is the disturbance when any aircraft passes through the atmosphere.
The larger the plane, the bigger the turbulence.
jitesh
This however has a very interesting application, @him
Generally when a large plane takes off, one needs to wait a little and ensure that much smaller planes don’t follow right after.
This is because the wake turbulence is so strong that it can cause system failures and in some cases.. a fatal crash.

Wow amazing & interesting

Today’s plane is the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
📸: HND (Haneda Airport, Tokyo). Sep 2022 by yours truly.
This plane completely redefined what passenger experience on airplanes is.
A few factors why:
1. The windows on the plane are the largest of ANY commercial aircraft. They also launched the first ever “dimmable windows”. Basically.. no window shades exist on the windows!
2. One of the lightest planes. It’s the first airliner made of composite materials. Most planes were and are made of aluminium.
3. The cabin is pressurised to 6000ft instead of 8000ft. Meaning you feel “better” inside the plane since it replicates air at a lower altitude.
There are many other technical aspects that also make this a pilot’s best friend - which we can skip for now!
Have you ever flown on this plane? If not, you should totally look out for being on one on your next flight.
If you’re lucky, you could be on one domestically in India too as Air India flies these regularly between DEL, BOM and BLR.

Coincidentally, the airline with the biggest fleet of 787’s is ANA. Same one in the picture above 👆🏽

Flown on this multiple times across different classes. If it weren’t for my insane love for the 747 and the A380’s upper deck, this would be my favourite

Totally. Can’t compare this with the Queen of the Skies and the Super Jumbo!
jitesh
It still amazes me @2shar that 747’s production outlived the A380
❤️

The A380 was simply bad timing
