Someone (with verified account) I know has 12k followers on Twitter. Most of their tweets have an average of 500 views and less than 5 likes.
The concept of followers seems to be losing ground.

A similar phenomenon is happening on youtube where some channels get millions of views on their shorts or ON some very particular videos but their subscriber count doesn't go beyond the low end of 5 or 4 figures. Seems like mainstream metrics are dying out.

Going off on a tangent here but I was thinking about the followers thing.
Most of the major social media platforms have been around for more than a decade now and so have the accounts on them. People have gone through life stages on their social media accounts.
I myself have had both twitter and Instagram for a good 7-8 years or more. I have followed accounts over the years according to my interests. But as my interests have changed, I have just accumulated a huge following list, 90% of which no longer relevant to me.

I used to follow 5k profiles on twitter circa 2019-2020 , which was the max limit an anon account can follow on twitter at that time. That really made my TL hell. I couldn't parse any useful info. Everytime I logged on twt my brain would overload with contradictory takes from every angle possible. That also made me anxious as hell. So I spent an entire year trying to trim down my following list to a manageable 1500.

Its better than before for sure even with all the horrible changes brought by elon. I found making lists for one's preferred niche topic far better alternative than following hundreds of accounts. By making topic specific lists you can curate your TL better on twt.
