I've been a stranger to filmmaker Todd Haynes' past work but his love for biographies has not been strange to me. Carol is a film of exquisite subtlety and longing, a work that does not so much announce its emotions as allow them to slowly bloom in the hearts of its characters—and its audience. Adapted from Patricia Highsmith’s novel The Price of Salt, it is a story of forbidden love in 1950s America, told with an observer’s eye and a poet’s soul.

It's 2014, and you're in high school. Belting out 'Lost Stars' with your friends in an empty classroom after a practice session for your seniors' farewell. Life doesn't seem that bad. It's the same feeling I got while watching this film for the first time.

One of the most impressive and jarring openings that warrants your watch. An enchanting homage to Murnau's original adaptation (1922), it is also director Werner Herzog's meditative—and quite sympathetic—gaze into the tragic quiet death of the monster, Count Dracula, and along with it, a world stricken with the Black Death (bubonic plague).

Under the Skin was my first exposure to Jonathan Glazer's work, and I'm glad that it was. Based on Michel Faber's sci-fi satiric novel of the same name, it dares to be a touch more idiosyncratic, taking on its own hauntingly poetic form. Much like the form of its protagonist: an alien-succubus passing through dreary towns in search of her next prey. All of it feels strange, visceral, atmospheric but above all, surreal.

The perfect antithesis to the 'birth of Jesus', a double-edged blasphemy, first penned by a Jewish novelist, himself a self-declared athiest, and then diegetically translated onscreen by a man, let's say, now better not talked about in good faith. Is this horror new and grotesque? It may have been for its time. But women know and have known this horror all too well.
