First listen on the album. Getting pleasant & vivid flashbacks of Em throughout the years. I still have somewhat mixed feelings on this one, but the choppy Slim Shadyesque rhymes were oh so dearly missed 😭

Haven’t seen a proper slim shady work since Marshall Mathers lp2. And I still return to the Eminem Show when its Eminem time. The decline is real.

He's chasing his own ghost and it's saddening to me. Bits and pieces of him are still in there in his lyrical prowess and technicality, but the essence is lost. As a fan, I'm gonna probably tune in for years to come but it is what it is.

On point. Chasing his own ghost. The bigger reason from what I can see is his political pandering - the antithesis of authenticity - the worst thing an artist can do.

Could you elaborate on political pandering? You mean the Trump era stuff? Or his anti-political correctness stance?

The fact that all that is even a part of his core substance.
Compare that with Jay-Z’s 4:44 or Danny Brown’s Quaranta. Their subject matter is much more substantive & authentic.
Not to mention, Slim Shady is the type of dude who’d make a Trump rally song, just to piss everyone off.

Oh, that. I don't mind it much, considering peak Eminem has also been overtly political and made bangers like White America, Mosh, We As Americans, etc. I find 4:44 to be a very personal album, something Jay Z has rarely done or ventured into before. Wouldn't compare along those lines.

My point was more about authenticity. Eminem transcended politics. Now he doesn’t. Instead he’s taking a stance one way or another and making statement. That’s less authentic.

I agree with this in the sense that his subject matter has been the same, more or less, for years now. Revival was his statement-making album, like you're suggesting, and easily one of his weakests.

It wasn’t much of a revival. More like a rehash. But I suspect, Eminem as an artist, has ran out of things to say. And shock value can’t substitute creativity for long.
