In the heart of Shinjuku, Japan, there exists a tale as rich and savory as the authentic curry served at Nakamuraya, a hidden gem known to the people there. While many savor the aromatic blend of Indian spices and Japanese rice, few are privy to the story that gave birth to this culinary fusion.

It all began when Nakamuraya bakery owners, Aizo and Kokko Soma, offered refuge to an Indian revolutionary, Rash Behari Bose, who had fled to Japan during World War I in 1915.

Thus began a journey that would eventually lead to the creation of one of Japan's most cherished comfort foods.

Bose would go on to marry the Soma family's daughter only to lose her at the tender age of 26, and raise two children of his own. He would then take over the Nakamuraya bakery, while furthering his stay for revolutionary cause in Japan. To bring the flavours of his home to Japan, he would start preparing dishes with Indian culinary traditions and spices.

Nakamuraya's curry is served with Japanese white rice and cucumber and leek, giving it a distinct Japanese flavor. Yet, it still holds true to its authentic Indian roots, thanks to the use of traditional Indian spices. The Shinjuku flagship store today boasts a curry restaurant called Manna, which attracts curry lovers from all over. Karē raisu is still one of their bestsellers.
