10 iconic film locations you can actually visit in real life ✨
I’ve been revisiting some of the popular movies recently, and it's got me wondering about real locations vs. sets and green screen magic. It's interesting to note that some iconic film locations actually exist in real life and are open to visitors.

1. The Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, Colorado, USA
Stephen King once had a nightmare during his stay at the hotel in 1974 and turned it into a horror masterpiece with "The Shining." The Stanley Hotel served as the inspiration for the eerie Overlook Hotel in the film.
Fun fact: Unhappy with Kubrick’s interpretation of the novel, King shot his own mini-series produced by ABC here. Timberline Lodge in Oregon served as the exterior of the haunted Overlook Hotel in Stanley Kubrick's The Shining.

2. Palace of Versailles, France
Most of Marie Antoinette (2006) was shot here. If you’re familiar with Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, you’ll find some scenes shot at the Hall of Mirrors and Bassin d’Apollo.

3. Sayama Hills, Saitama, Japan
That whimsical forest in My Neighbor Totoro? Yep. Inspired by this beautiful region located just outside of Tokyo.
4. Alnwick Castle, England
The first two films in the Harry Potter series were filmed on this location.
In one memorable scene, Harry and Ron crash-landed the Weasley family's enchanted flying car in the inner baileys of the castle.

5. The Skellig Michael, Ireland
The Skelligs served as Luke Skywalker’s hideout in the Star Wars episodes 7 and 8, "The Last Jedi" and "The Force Awakens."

6. Helsetkopen Mountain, Norway
Tom Cruise flying off the top of a mountain? This is the place. The final scenes of Dead Reckoning take place on a train headed to Innsbruck from Venice. Found the backdrop in this act is just breathtakingly amazing.
7. Doune Castle, Stirling, Scotland
The greatest comedy from the West? Monty Python and the Holy Grail was mostly shot in Scotland, while this castle served as Guy de Lombard’s humble abode.
8. Chungking Mansions, Hong Kong, China
The first half of Chungking Express takes place in the sprawling urban complex. It is the epitome of nightlife in Hong Kong, filled with narrow streets, neon lights, and dark alleys.
9. Mehran Fort, Jodhpur, India
This is probably common knowledge, but the iconic prison scenes where Bruce Wayne escapes from a deep, underground prison in The Dark Knight Rises were filmed in the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur.

10. Zhangjiajie National Park, Hunan Province, China
Pandora is much closer to us than we think. The Floating Hallelujah Mountains in Avatar is perhaps the most notable and wonderful location in the movie and was shot here!

This is probably common knowledge, but the iconic prison scenes where Bruce Wayne escapes from a deep, underground prison in The Dark Knight Rises were filmed in the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur.

Not exactly a place which one can visit anymore, but I am always wanted to experience the 70's Brooklyn and Manhattan's urban landscape and streets that the likes of Scorsese, Depalma, Friedkin depicted so well in their initial films.

Casa malaparte from Godard's The Contempt is such an iconic film destination now

I have my own reservations about Bertolucci but The Conformist is one of the finest looking films ever shot in Rome and Paris, crafted inch-perfect.
