Not all mornings are created equal. How to create a morning routine and conquer the day…

If you want to start your day off well, it really starts the night before. Turn off all your screens and limit indoor lights post 10pm. Avoid any form of physical exercise upto 4 hours prior your bed time. I usually wind up my workouts before 7pm if I work out in the evenings which I usually don’t. A hot shower before bed helps and so does good curtains to block out all the light in the bedroom. Turning down the AC to about 20 degrees is ideal.

I usually try to hit the sack by 11pm and target getting up by 6:30am. Try to get about 15 minutes of sun exposure within the first 10 mins of waking up. During winters, you could also use a red light lamp or sun-similar lamp. This really helps regulate your circadian rhythm (body clock) and helps with sleep.

After that, get some water in your system and get about 30 mins of workout in. If you can’t go out, do a few rounds of a HIIT circuit enough to get you to sweat it out. Quickly follow it up with a hot shower for a minute and then be it with cold shower. This will really set you up for the day.

I get about 22 minutes of meditation in twice a day (not the best disciplined to follow this through) and I love to do this before I dive into work. Post that, I’d usually do a brain dump (take a piece of paper and write down two pages of whatever is in your head. Don’t self-edit while you do).

The brain dump helps me understand the top themes at the top of my head which I try to make a to-do list out of. Unlike what productivity influencers will tell you, get the easiest things out of the way first. A few quick wins will give you the motivation to power through the rest.

Push your meetings and calls as late as you can. Mornings are for your creative work and that which requires reasoning and presence. Hope this helps.

Additionally, I tend not to eat post 8pm and avoid breakfast. Instead, I take an early lunch which I usually restrict it to mostly protein and fibre. Push caffeine intake to about 10am instead of first thing in the morning. As cortisol rises in the morning, so does your blood glucose. Caffeine lowers insulin sensitivity. So, waiting for it to subside will avoid the energy crash for you.

Don’t delve straight into work emails before you’ve done a brain dump. This makes you more reactive than strategic. Hope you go on and conquer your day! Good morning!

The brain dump is so cool! What does it typically contain? Apart from your to-dos? And do you go back to it during the day?

I borrowed this from The Artists Way where the author suggested it as a way to get your latent thoughts out of your head and into your consciousness with very little friction. Usually, we’re used to writing with a voice in our head trying to edit things we write. Writing without self-editing reveals a lot of what’s at the top of your head. This is just unstructured thoughts, not to-dos.

Once I’m done with the brain dump, I’d usually read through it, pick out top themes that pertain to work and build to-dos out of them. A lot of the brain dump is usually things in my head that aren’t actioned yet.

This is such good stuff! I recently started doing something similar, when I write down whatever I m thinking in the morning!
I mostly forget about it during the day and can rarely ever make it actionable lol

That’s awesome! Brain dumps are usually ephemeral thoughts akin to endless loops in your head sucking in your brain capacity. Just read through it and loosely pick out things that need actioning - sort of like the Inbox to Actions workflow in the GTD framework.
