so in surat and all over gujarat , people welcome Goddess Maa Amba , pandals are decorated, and around that pandals people start doing garba. Its most loved folk dance around all over gujarat. It is believed that garba is form of worship towards Goddess Maa Amba. There are lightings around all over city. Its like no darkness in the city for all the 9 nights and these are one of the best nights to witness 🤩 🥳

And we light this from 2nd day till saptami and after ashtami’s hawan, put it at one of the temples.
My favourite bit though is playing mataji na garba, the traditional ones and not the disco dandiya thing.
When I moved from Porbandar I didn’t know that I’ll never get to enjoy the garba in its purest form ever again.
In Porbandar, women used to gather around “garbi” and sing garbas while going around doing traditional 2tali and 3 tali. I haven’t experienced it anywhere else.

What is that thing called where garbi-kanya are invited for dinner? I remember my sister going to those and I would tag along because waha ice-cream milega 😂. It stopped as I got older because it's supposed to be for the girls in garbi only.

Yup the young girls who haven’t got their periods yet are invited to have food and are sometimes given gifts on or after ashtami. I remember there were time when I had invites from 10+ houses for lunch on the same day so I’d eat one bite at each place. They treat Lorene girls like mataji and wash their feet and give them a piece of supari.
Girls also go with their garba to sing garba art different houses and are given candies in return. It’s the Gujarati Halloween.
On the last day you get candies and some money that you divide amongst your group.
