"With great tablets come great price tags," Peter Parker's uncle would have told him if he was more into tech pricing than speeches on responsibility. And well, a good tablet is likely to put you back by close to Rs 20,000 and a really good one will make you wonder if you are not better off getting a notebook for the same price. So what can you expect from a tablet that is priced around Rs 10,000 - Rs 10,999? We had limited expectations of the Redmi Pad SE 4G, and we were surprised!

The Remi Pad SE 4G is small for a tablet, but still packs in a very decent 8.7 inch display. You can actually hold it in your hand, if you are willing to stretch your fingers a little. Xiaomi also offers a very handy carrying case that lets you use it one-handed with a degree of ease - see the pic in the previous bit! And at 375 grams, it is heavier than a phone (which are generally around 200-220 grams) but much lighter than most large tablets (which are closer to 500 grams).

Within that relatively portable frame come some decent specs. The 8.7 inch display is HD (1340 x 800) and has a refresh rate of 90 Hz, and the processor on the tablet is the mid-segment but decent-ish MediaTek Hello G85. RAM is limited to 4 GB (the biggest catch in the tab, we think) but storage is 64 GB and 128 GB, and there is support for memory cards.

A very pleasant surprise is the presence of stereo speakers and yes, even a 3.5 mm audio jack, with support for Dolby Atmos. There is a 8 MP camera on the back and a 5 MP one in front. The tablet runs on Android 14, with Xiaomi's HypeOS on top and has a large 6650 mAh battery, although charging speed is a VERY modest 10W (it is going to take 4-5 hours to charge this!). And as its name indicates, it comes with 4G support.

For its price, the Redmi Pad SE 4G seems a pretty solid performer. It is very well designed and comes with IP53 dust and water resistance, which is handy. The 4GB RAM obviously limits its multi-tasking and gaming potential but if you want something that is easy to carry around, and great to view and read content on, this is terrific, The speakers are very good and 4G connectivity (yes, you can make calls from it) with a large-ish display at around 10K is quite a bargain, That battery might take a long time to charge, but it goes on and on!

In fact, it seems ironical but the Redmi Pad SE 4G seems to reflect the values of the OG iPad - it is a tablet designed mainly for reading, browsing and watching content. Think of it not as a wannabe computer but an extra large budget segment phone. Yeah, we would have liked a higher resolution display, more RAM and faster charging, but even without them, this is a great option for those who want a device larger display than their phone that's easy to carry and does not cost a bomb, We likes!
