Want to get headphones with audiophile level sound, and that too for under Rs 4,000 (no, we did not miss any zeroes - we meant under Rupees four thousand)? Just get the Samson SR850. They are actually semi-open back headphones and have huge 50 mm drivers. Their design allows them to deliver a surprisingly wide soundstage for their price, and while some might find them a little too sharp (treble can be piercing), the audio quality is frankly staggering for the price, with amazing clarity and good treble. They also are not high-impedance so can actually run off a phone even. A terrific starting point for anyone who wants to know what the fuss about high quality audio is about - they sound better than some headphones from big brands that come with price tags that are three times higher. Most people do not, We found out from one of our super budget audiophile friends. But our pair is working fine after almost three years!

What's surprising is that we have found their performance to be better than most Sennheiser's in the sub Rs 10,000 zone. These get a little sharp if anything, but the clarity levels and soundstage are astonishingly good.

We actually met the distributors and they were like "Sir, the proper audiophiles will buy Sony, Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic and others. The Rs 4,000 budget folks will want more colourful headphones with bass - the segment for this is very tiny!"
