OnePlus has come out with a new tablet. And this one could rattle not just other Android tablets but even make the mighty iPad frown. Right, we know that is VERY high praise, but bear with us, the OnePlus Pad 2 has got a truckload of stuff beneath a very sleek exterior. And most important of all, it does not cost the earth!

The most intriguing aspect of the OnePlus Pad 2 is the 7:5 aspect ratio (pun intended) of its large 12.1 inch display, which means it is more square than rectangle-shaped. OnePlus claims it makes it easier to read on, and well, while the tablet is a big one, reading on it is certainly a pleasure.

It is a terrific display for other content consumption too, being impressively bright and with a very high resolution of 3000 x 2120 pixels, and a high refresh rate of 144 Hz. That gives the OnePlus Pad 2 a pixel density of 303 ppi - the iPad Air has 264 ppi, just for the record, and a refresh rate of 60 Hz. Is it easier to read content on this as compared to the iPad Air? We will go out on a limb and say it runs it very close and at times seems better, although there is a fair bit of "banding" in videos. Speaking of videos, watching them is a pretty immersive experience, thanks to SIX speakers on the OnePlus Pad 2.

The OnePlus Pad 2 is also VERY impressively thin - it is just 6.5 mm thin, which is thinner than most smartphones out there. In fact, it almost seems a little TOO thin at times with its curved sides (one is flat for charging a stylus), and for its size (it is 268.7 mm tall), it is not too heavy at 584 grams. It is a little slippery with those curved sides, but has a very solid feel to it, and that is because its sides and back are made of high quality aluminium.

The OnePlus Pad 2 is pretty well stacked in the hardware department - it runs on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip, similar to the one seen on the premium Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra. You also get RAM and storage options of 8 GB/ 128 GB and 12 GB/ 256 GB and a large 9610 mAh battery that can be fully charged in about an hour and a half thanks to a 67W charger in the box. The rear camera is 13 MP (do folks really use tabs extensively for photography), while the front facing camera is an 8 megapixel one.

Of course, this being a OnePlus product, it runs on OxygenOS, but this time there is also a very generous dollop of AI tools in there, including image editors, AI writers and so on, with more promised in the coming days. They all run on top of Android 14. This is a pretty well-stacked tablet in hardware and software terms, both!

Mind you, it is not perfect. There is no 5G variant of the tablet, which might be a bit of an annoyance to some, and there is no fingerprint scanner, which might be a deal breaker for some. There is also greater integration with OnePlus devices than with others, which makes sense from an eco-system point of view, but can result in some folks feeling left out. And of course, no matter how much OnePlus tweaks it, Android on tablets remain an eccentric proposition and nowhere near as smooth as iPadOS on an iPad. But then...there's the price!

The OnePlus Pad 2 comes with pricing that is frankly crazy value for money: the 8 GB/ 128 GB variant is available for Rs 39,999, and the 12 GB/ 256 GB variant is available for Rs 42,999. When you factor in that there is no Android tablet with a similar configuration available for even below Rs 50,000, and that the iPad Air (the closest competitor from Apple) starts at Rs 59,999, the sheer value that the OnePlus Pad 2 brings to the tablet table becomes clear. This is hands down the most affordable flagship Android tablet out there. It has the specs, looks and price. iPad killer? Potentially.
