Xiaomi has had the knack of coming out with devices that look premium and yet are relatively easy on the pocket. And its latest tablet in India, the Redmi Pad SE, totally fits this bill. At first glance, this looks like a very premium product with a very slim (7.36 mm) aluminium alloy body and frame, and a 11 inch display. There is general surprise when people discover that the tablet actually starts at a price of Rs 12,999!

That price is surprising not just in terms of design, but also in terms of performance, because the Redmi Pad SE actually manages to pack in a fair bit into its slim frame for that price. You get a FHD+ (1900 x 1200) display, quad speakers with Dolby Atmos, a 3.5 mm audio jack, and a massive 8000 mAh battery that can last through almost 3 Bollywood blockbusters!

There are a few catches, though - the chip powering it is the VERY mid-segment Qualcomm Snapdragon 680, so please forget about high-end gaming, and the tablet comes with Android 13 out of the box. Still you end up getting a great display for viewing and reading content with oodles of battery life (although it charges horribly slowly at 10W with the bundled charger - four hours to charge it fully, we kid you not). But then, you actually get usable multitasking especially if you opt for the 6GB/ 128 GB or 8 GB/ 128 GB variants (the base 4 GB/ 128 GB one can struggle a little!).

You also get a megapixel rear camera and a 5 megapixel selfie snapper - the rear one is decent enough for shooting videos and images in good light conditions when you have no other camera, and the front facer is best left to video calls. But then, this is a Rs 12,999 tablet (Rs 14,999 if you go for the top 8 GB/ 128 GB variant, and even that is a heck of a price). It is pretty much a great tablet for those who love binge watching films or shows or just want to browse the Web and network socially for long periods of time. Keep it out of gaming and the chances are that it will serve you well. Incidentally, it comes with a microSD card slot - so you can carry your films and videos around and not be limited by the 128 GB storage onboard.

In some ways, this is a classic device that falls between a phone and a notebook - you get big screen goodness without the burden of a keyboard, and the familiarity of Android on a touchscreen. All in an elegant and slim design made of metal and glass. Pretty good for those of us who want a large display for their video and show fix, and do not want to splurge on an iPad or a Galaxy Tab. Honestly, the combination of display, sound (those quad speakers sound very impressive) and battery life make this a heck of a deal at Rs 12,999 or even Rs 14,999 for the highest variant. And those sleek looks do its prospects no harm at all. A very solid value for money tab that gives premium design feels, in best Xiaomi tradition!

The only thing separating this and iPad seems to be the OS. But what a crazy pricing difference.

Oh yes. It is pretty amazing for the price. Not the greatest at gaming, but super for just viewing and reading. And such a good design

Like we discussed the other day, I would not expect Gaming to be a thing at this pricing 😁
