Raise the topic of phones with great cameras and it is a fair chance that the "usual suspects" will pop up - the iPhone 15 Pro Max, the Galaxy S24 Ultra, the Pixel 8 Pro, the Vivo X100 Pro and now, the Xiaomi 14 Ultra...and a few other flagships. Almost no one will mention the Vivo V30 Pro, a phone recently launched for Rs 41,999. After all, it is not a "real" flagship. Well, perhaps not, but it could be perhaps the best equipped camera phone in town!

The V30 Pro might not come with the sort of price tag that premium flagships command, but it is the first V series phone to come with cameras from the legendary Zeiss - until now, only the flagship X series had them. The phone has three 50 megapixel shooters on the back - a main with OIS, a 'professional portrait' (telephoto) and an ultrawide with auto focus. All of these come with Zeiss lenses. Beneath them is a square-ish Aura Flash designed for portraits!

The Vivo V30 Pro also boasts a 50 megapixel selfie camera, and it comes with autofocus, a group selfie mode and 4K video! That's FOUR 50 megapixel cameras, all with autofocus and three with Zeiss expertise. There are plenty of Zeiss portrait shooting modes in there as well, and while the interface can seem a little intimidating (the curiously named FunTouch OS), there is a truckload you can do in terms of photo and video edits on this phone!

The other specs are rather good too - you get a curved 6.78 inch AMOLED display with 120 Hz refresh rate, a very good just below flagship MediaTek Dimensity 8200 chip and a 5000 mAh battery with 80W charging. All this in a rather sleek looking glass front and back design. At Rs 41,999, that is quite a lot. The only thing we really missed was stereo speakers. IP rating is also a rather humble IP54. But those cameras are what interest us...

We have seen phones cut corners with a few cameras (remove autofocus, reduce resolution). On paper, the Vivo V30 Pro does not seem to have done that - all of its 50 megapixel cameras bring autofocus and 4K video to the table. Theoretically, you can use any of the four cameras to take good images and videos. The Zeiss lenses and modes are the icing on the cake. It ain't a flagship but seems like one crazy cameraphone, That selfie camera makes it special!

Best in town?????
Well, in a manner of speaking - even the S24 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max do not have this level of selfie camera. So basically, this is one of the few phones where you can use ANY camera to shoot and get a good shot or video. It will lose out in one to one image/video comparisons but as an all-in-one, it is scary!

It's a better package than S24 or 15 Pro Max?

It really depends on how much weightage you give to the selfie camera and Zeiss effects. If one looks just at rear cameras, this one will struggle to make the top ten - it has very good rather than excellent cameras. Bring that 50 megapixel selfie into play and the margins change.

I mean, selfie cameras are not supposed to be able to do this...

Or this, for that matter.

Hai na? A lot of us actually stop just at the rear cameras, but Vivo says that selfie cameras are used so often that they deserve some attention too. The spin they are giving this phone is that "it is the best phone for content creators and vloggers" as it works very well from front as well as back.

Agree with this notion now that I think about it. I click myself almost never and hence, hardly ever use selfie cam.

It is a target niche that Vivo has grabbed. And interestingly, they do not make their "selfie" camera phones too expensive, so they get more mainstream users.

Great move for sure!
