We are going to be talking of the OnePlus Open for the next few days, as it does seem to be THE foldable of the year so far. We are going to begin with what we think is its most outstanding feature - nope, not the cameras (sorry, Hasselblad), but the external or 'cover' display. It is hands down the best we have seen on a foldable launched in India, and when you consider that the others have come from Samsung, that's saying something!

Samsung's Z Fold series has been the OG foldable series for a while now. But the external displays of the Galaxy Z Fold series have tended to be long-ish - the latest Z Fold 5 has an external display of 6.2 inches with a very odd resolution of 904 x 2316. This is handy enough, but not really as convenient as using a normal candy bar, as it is odd-shaped. The OnePlus Open, however, has a very 'normal' external display, and that makes a HUGE difference!
In spec terms. the OnePlus Open has a 6.31 inch Super Fluid AMOLED display. But what makes it special is its design and resolution. It comes with a 2484 x 1116 resolution and 120 Hz refresh rate, which is very similar to what you get on a 'normal phone.' The result? Unlike the Galaxy Z Fold series, you can actually do a lot of work on the external display itself. You can easily watch videos, browse the Web, compose messages - all without opening the Open!
And the fact that the OnePlus Open works brilliantly even when shut is a massive deal. Because it literally means you do not have to keep opening it - something we had to do with the Z Fold, which often was simply too narrow to type on or watch videos on, thanks to that resolution. The Galaxy Z Fold always gave the feels of a tablet that shut, the OnePlus Open feels like a thickish phone that opens. Pun intended. That external display makes a BIG difference!
