Tap & Pay

Was skeptical to share this on Twitter but here goes - I have been using google pay since Apr 2018 when the rewards were ~ 500 inr cash backs. When I left, back in 2022, the rewards were merely few coupons that weren’t usable. Cred was a huge deal (still is) for cash backs although I never used it (this is when Cred was in the neumorphism phase) I don’t understand why 1) the recent Tap & Pay by Cred is revolutionary? Since Apple Pay already is relevant and has amazing UX? 2) people are saying UPI is best thing that happened to India and other countries are missing out on it? I have been using Apple Pay a lot in the past year and I am not sure what point am I missing? This is a genuine query🥸

I’m also curious to read what others have to say

Agree on #1. Cred isn’t doing anything new and I believe other players integrated HCE (host-based card emulation) much earlier. Besides HCE for 3rd parties is Android-only, so that leaves out a chunk of users. As for #2. UPI deserves all the praise because it eliminates friction not just for consumers but also for merchants. When even a pani-puri or chai wala has a QR code, you know that it’s something revolutionary and has nailed UX.

Also finance ministry has promised 0 charges for UPI for foreseeable future. CC/Debits incur about 2%. In practice this point alone holds the most weightage. Just today I went to my local hardware store for bathroom fittings, the store owners themselves encourage to pay via UPI to save the fees on card txns or straight up tell you to pay 2-3% extra if you want to use card.

There’s another important point for UPI — it’s not connected to one company per se. It’s available to anyone who holds a bank account and uses a phone, which is a great majority

And UPI is convenient to everyone. Now I can go out with just my phone and purchase literally anything. Grocery, medicines, fuel. Many big shops have started giving preference to UPI and removing card based payments since they need to pay 2%.
