Shogun had a pretty subversive finale. Instead of showing some epic battle, it focused on behind-the-scenes Realpolitiking and how wars are won even before the first sword is drawn on the battlefield 10/10.

Saw Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret. Nothing extraordinary but such a sweet little coming-of-age film, seen through preteen female lens. Rachel McAdams and Abby Ryder Fortson are so good in this.

Starting of 2024 with one of the most compelling Sci-fi murder mysteries I have ever seen- 'Pluto'. If you love a good character driven mystery with some sci-fi bent, you'll dig this anime.

We can officially say "Movies are back" when "Be Gay, Do Crime" finally materializes into an awesome neo-noir. The trailer for this looks cool as hell.

Thought I'd watch Michael Mann's Thief before seeing Ferrari, and the experience did not disappoint. For the early '80s, the movie has one of the most modern and slickest looks ever. One word to describe it would be tactile. Nobody makes better movies about men who are torn between choosing to do the thing they love, i.e., their work, and yearning for a quiet domestic life than Mann."

Blue Eye Samurai is so good. Completely took me by surprise. I thought it was gonna be your paint-by-number revenge tale but it turned out to be much better than that.

Lowkey Fincher is the best Fncher. No lofty moral posturing or grand philosophical standings, just straightforward, razor-sharp precision. He can make mundane workmanship looks sexy as hell. Another repudiation of Sigma mindset by him after The Fight Club and The Social Network.

Love how there are some words you can always rely upon to make your paper sound more academic for e.g. Instrumental. I can say the most basic shit like water is instrumental in quenching one's thirst and it'll always sound like some key scientific insight has been revealed.

Since it's gonna be Scorsese month I wanted to post one of my favorite movie openings. What really makes it special is that it crystallizes the whole career of Scorsese. That frame of an awkward handshake between a gangster and the priest should tell you all about what themes and emotions really concerns Scorsese. His characters are always walking a fine between sin and salvation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?…

Have been watching The Yakuza Papers and honestly this is how you do gangster films. Instead of glorifying and mythologizing violence and gang wars, make a series where not even a single character is likeable. Every person is a scummy, petulant, piece of shit, who'll gladly fuck over his blood-sworn brothers just to get a lil ahead in the game. Violence is so laughably chaotic and slapstick, every 2 mins there is some pointless killing.

Always thought American society was singular in its liberalism. Even with all its problems, it still remains the most liberal country in the world. One of the reasons being whenever the Brits tried to impose some sort of centralized governance on early settlers, they could just leave and settle down somewhere else, far from the reach of any authority. An unprecedented freedom of movement that w… Read more
