Expert Beginner - Mantras from Artists The Journey Never Ends. Lately, I've been reflecting a lot on the balance between developing expertise and maintaining humility. It's a delicate dance, isn't it? On one hand, dedicating ourselves to a craft or skill inevitably leads to proficiency and confidence. But when is the line crossed into complacency or arrogance? How do we keep growing without thinking we've got it all figured out?

This is why I'm drawn to the notion of the "expert beginner" - someone who nurtures their inner novice even as their competency expands. They understand the seduction of pride and actively choose curiosity instead. The expert beginner stays humble enough to ask questions, make mistakes, and see teachers all around them.

Their fulfilment comes from the process, not just the product. Progress matters more than perfection. This mentality serves us well across all facets of life. In relationships, we recognise there is always more to understand about others. At work, we reject the illusion that we can't get better. And when pursuing passions, we retain the hunger of a rookie rather than the entitlement of a veteran.

I think we could all use the reminder to reconnect to our beginner's heart and mind sometimes. Complacency is the enemy of growth. Staying grounded allows us to keep evolving. Onward with wonder! 💭

As we grow up, we get into a rut of things and responsibilities. So much so that we forget why did we start something in the first place and often forget to give our 110%.
