We’re contemplating introducing a limit to number of characters per bit.
What’re your thoughts?

No.

What’s the goal of doing this? Personally haven’t seen very long bits. People seem to carry over a twitter mental model already.
Would be better to experiment (A/B) this I would say
Gotcha. It is a bit awkward to read this. Is the goal to improve readability then?
Can also be solved by a right nudge instead of character limit, something to consider.
Would say that as a “bit” metaphor a very long post doesn’t make too much sense. (Maybe a longer post is a byte :P)

Okay try writing what you wrote as 3 separate bits once @harshaog and then I’ll explain

If I was to do 3 bits, I would be doing it replying to my previous bit. Like I create a thread on an iMessage

So this would be another bit

Not sure if it is more or less clumsy. Depends on how the threading of bits works
harshaog
Non-reply just adding a bit directly also does work though
him
Nope. That’s where current mental models are incorrect

Let me explain

Do you see what I’ve written? These are separate bits if you look closely.

Oh interesting 🤔 Yes
harshaog
The goal is to read it better or to be able to reply to “sub-bits”?

Read and respond better

Read and respond better
For this purpose this seems a much better approach. Consumption already feels convenient for sure replying to this specific sub-bit
But control of reply is still in the hand of creator. A consumer of the thread might want to reply to another sub-bit which the creator chose not to separate out. But that might be too much to solve. I’ve seen some website that allows replies to any specific sentence you choose, that would be overkill here

There’s no thread 🤣

Do you have some limit in mind already?
him
Yes we do
rajat
Can you tell? And do you know what's the average size of bit so far?
him
Average is lower. But some exceptions exist.
him
We’re looking at 462 characters per bit.

I have always fancied the idea of having a limit. It teaches us brevity, and consumption becomes easier and faster. I barely ever reach the end of a long a bit, personally. At the same time, I m very open to consuming bite sized bits. Even if they don’t literally fall in my interest category

Didn’t understand the second part

@amit this is me telling ‘didn’t understand’ to a designer

If you give me 1 huge bit of my interest, and 3 smaller bits around my interest, I would subconsciously choose the latter, I think. Trying to say that

Crisper stuff basically?

Yes! Also, interested or not — faster decision

Why no?
Not entirely against any sort of limit. But it is a pain point at times. Whenever I am writing a tweet, I have to prioritise staying in character limit than quality of the tweet. Making a second tweet is not a great option because it will have a lot less reach. These are the issues, if all my bits can be shown to the reader at once, I don’t think so a character limit is an issue.

Also, most people do not want to read an entire article on social platform. And the number of consumers/readers are going to be more than the creators, brevity is important.

Yeah, agreed.
Twitter without the FOMO problems. WhatsApp without the lack of threading. That’s Openvy
