Stumbled upon Tool again on my drive back home today. Tool is a vibe that creeps up on you when the music stops and your mind wanders to places you don’t usually allow it to.

One of my favourites from Tool is Wings for Marie (10000 days part 2).

At the outset, it’s a long one but somewhere past 30 seconds the lyrics creep up on you.

It was supposedly written after the artist’s mother passed away and it deals with many emotions — from the artist letting go of her/finding acceptance to coming to terms with how human she was.

If you look at it from the lens of the different stages of grief, the artist is probably oscillating between bargaining and acceptance. It’s so surreal and raw, the lyrics and the emotions they convey, it draws you in to feel them as the song goes on — the vocals quarter of a beat behind the instrumentals (a signature tell of all Tool songs).

(Instead of adding bits after I add the loop, I’m just adding bits right at the start (like a thread). Writing them out like paragraphs.)

Some of my favourite lines from the song:
“And this little light of mine
A gift you passed onto me
I'm gonna let it shine
To guide you safely on your way
Your way home..”
“Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough
You're going home”

“You're the only one who can hold your head up high
Shake your fist at the gates saying
"I have come home now
Fetch me the Spirit, the Son, and the Father
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended
It's time now
My time now
Give me my
Give me my wings"

Thanks for coming to my Tool appreciation loop. Hahaha 😂
