Visited Dehradun a few months back and met an elderly couple sitting in the hall where my friends were rehearsing for a music performance. When "Piya Tose Naina Laage Re" started playing, the couple looked at each other and began singing along. As we were about to leave, the uncle called the three of us over and chit chatted a lil then asked, "Beta, have you watched Guide?" We hadn't. He insisted, "Pehle aap Guide dekho." This line became an inside joke between us, mostly because he said it with such conviction and we thought he was just being a film snob. Three months later, I suddenly remembered the uncle’s line: "Pehle aap Guide dekho," and finally watched the film. I’m floored. The song "Piya Tose Naina Laage Re" is actually from this film and Waheeda Rehman's performance is remarkable. The song is so looooong I still watched the whole perfomance because its just lovely. Now I get why he said it with so much confidence. This film is truly a masterpiece.
