Google got into foldable waters last year with the Pixel Fold, which had mixed results. The Search Boss has now come out with its second Fold phone, the more powerfully specced and named Pixel Pro Fold. We got our hands on it and well, here is what we think.

At first glance, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold looks like a normal...well...kinda sorta normal phone. Yes, we know we said "kinda sorta" because while its external display is like that of a regular sized 6.3 inch phone (and does not have the TV remote-like tallness that the Galaxy Fold has), a slightly closer look will reveal its rather prominent corners on the left, which show that it is not really a regular phone.

In terms of design, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold cuts a very sleek figure for a foldable. It is an impressive 10.5 mm thin (the OnePlus 12 is 9.2 mm, for comparison, and that is a 'normal' phone) and is not too heavy at 257 grams. The front and back are Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and the frame is Armour Aluminium. We got the black or as Google prefers to call oot, "Obsidian" variant and it cuts a very smart figure. It is not as eye catching as the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro or the Red OnePlus Open, but radiates class in an understated manner.

There is no radical design overhaul here - you get the classic fold design, with a normal phone like 6.3 inch external display, and a large 8.0 inch display inside, when you 'open' the device. At a distance, it won't really stand out from the other foldables, unless you look at the cameras on the back, which come in two rows of capsule-shaped enclosures - something we have not seen before. There is a fingerprint scanner on the display/power button on the right. There are speakers on the top and on the base - standard fold stuff.

You get top notch hardware. The external display is a full HD(we do hope Samsung learns from this) AMOLED one with a refresh rate of 120 Hz, and the internal one has a 2076 x 2152 resolution with 120 Hz refresh rate. As this is a Pixel, it is powered by Google's own Tensor G4 chip and comes with 16 GB RAM and 256 GB storage. On the camera front, the back has a 48 megapixel main camera, a 10.8 megapixel telephoto with 5x zoom, and a 10.5 megapixel ultrawide, and both displays have 10 megapixel selfie cameras. You also get a large 4650 mAh battery (although charging speed remains slow-ish at 21W wired and an even slower 7.5W wireless), And yes, the phone comes with clean Android, lots and lots of AI tools, with assured Android updates for seven years!

All of this comes with a price tag of Rs 1,72,999, making the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold one of the most expensive foldable out there. We are going to be honest - it does not have the sort of hardware muscle that we saw on the Galaxy Z Fold 6 or the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro, and it is way more expensive than the OnePlus Open, which remains the best foldable for those on a tight budget, but....BUT this is a Pixel, which means that there will be a lot of Google Android sorcery on this one, Which might make it worth all those bucks. Stay tuned for more and shoot us any queries you have. We will do our best to answer!

Indeed. But then we suspect this is more a showcase by Google - a "here, this is what you can do with a foldable" for other brands rather than a direct challenge to ze Apples!

Indeed and they are very unlikely to unless they actually get more durable. The pricing is crazy but people do pay a bomb for iPhones and Galaxy S devices, but with foldables, you also run the risk of that crease in the middle literally splitting the device in a couple of years or lesser.
