Just how much phone can you get for about Rs 14,000? The value for money experts, Xiaomi have had a crack at answering that tricky question with their latest budget 5G device, the just-released Redmi 13 5G. The Redmi 13 5G is the successor of the Redmi 12 5G released last year, which was one of the most successful phones of the year, offering decent specs and 5G connectivity at a surprisingly affordable price. It is a good template to follow, and the Redmi 13 does exactly that, with some tweaks.

The Redmi 13 5G is a BIG phone. There's no getting around that. At 168.6 mm, it is much taller than the OnePlus 12 or the iPhone 15 Pro Max, and pretty wide at 76.28 mm (which is just below the 76.7 mm of the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which is supposed to be quite wide). And at 205 grams, it is not light either. This is a big phone, but at this price point, folks like to have big screens and big batteries, and with those, comes weight and height!

The remarkable thing is that this big phone is a bit of a beauty too. It definitely looks way more premium than its sub-Rs 15,000 price tag would suggest. That's because the front and back are glass, and our Hawaiian Blue variant had these classy silver stripes on the back that shine in the light. It is not a cutie pie, but a big beauty, and could pass off for a phone twice its price, with that back and straight sides. It is reasonably tough too - the front is Gorilla Glass 3 and the phone has IP53 splash resistance.

The front is smart enough too - a large 6.79 inch FHD+ display with 120 Hz refresh rate, although the slightly prominent 'chin' hints at its budget roots. It is also a LCD display rather than an AMOLED one, but at this price point, that's perfectly fine. It is also a nice, bright display, and well, its size means it is pretty good to view content on!

The spec sheet is however, decidedly budget level. The highlight is the 108 megapixel camera on the back, although its companion is a mere 2 megapixels. You also get a Qualcomm Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 AE processor, which is a decent mid-segmenter and can handle a little gaming but is made more for daily life than the gaming zone,

You also get a massive 5030 mAh battery with support for 33W charging, and a charger in the box as well (you never know these days). There is also room for those two old favourites - a 3.5 mm audio jack and an expandable storage slot. You get only a single speaker though it is really loud. Stereo should be staple, really.

As this is a LCD display, you cannot get an in-display fingerprint sensor - it is on the side on the power button. You also get very good 5G connectivity, Bluetooth, GPS and an infra red blaster - a Redmi feature we love as it lets us use the phone as a remote control of sorts.,

All of this at Rs 13,999 for a 6 GB/ 128 GB RAM and storage variant and Rs 15, 499 for a 8 GB/ 128 GB one. You are getting some pretty strong basics and a lot of bigs - battery, display, main camera - and with a relatively small price tag. You are looking for a good looking, VERY solid value for money smartphone that is terrific for day to day work? This one could be it!
