Cometh the World Cup, cometh a deluge of cricket and World Cup-themed ads. These broadly follow a template - revolving around a cricketer(s) and the tournament, with some fans thrown in for good measure. Imagine an ad around a cricket World Cup that did not feature a single known cricketer, mention the tournament and or even cricket or even the product? It happened. We consider it the greatest cricket ad ever. It came from Coca-Cola in 1996.

Coca-Cola had just come back to India a few years ago. And had believed it had staged a coup by becoming the official drink of the 1996 World Cup. Its arch-rival, Pepsi, stole a march over it by signing up most cricket stars, and coming out with an ad campaign that poked fun at Coca-Cola - 'Nothing official about it.' Coca-Cola's initial animation-based campaign got totally overshadowed by Pepsi's witty, entertaining, cricket star laden ads.

Just when it seemed Pepsi had won this round of the Cola wars, Coca-Cola unleashed a new, one minute ad called "Passion has a color." Conceptualised by Wieden-Kennedy, it was directed by Tarsem Singh, who had shot to fame with his video of REM's "Losing My Religion." Shot almost entirely in Jaisalmer, it featured no known cricketers, but simply paid tribute to street and maidan cricket. It showed cricket being played in streets, fields, playgrounds...

There were Coca-Cola banners on some walls, and a few bottles placed here and there, but there was no reference to the brand at all. It was just cricket being played by 'normal' people in their everyday lives. And was shot through a red filter that was the color of, you guessed it, Coca-Cola. 'Passion has a color,' the ad subtly said. Accompanying this was the music and voice of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan singing the famous "Dum Mast Kalandar Mast Mast..."

Decades after it was aired , "Passion has a color" is still relevant. It is perhaps never going to get dated, because it is not tied to a team, a tournament, or a time. It is an ad totally about cricket being played not by stars, but by its followers. Not in stadiums, but in any place wide enough to swing a bat, or bowl a ball. All bathed in the color of Coca-Cola. Greatest cricket ad ever? Yup! https://youtu.be/tjYFDW5ccgc?s…
